How this was calculated
  1. Convert to pascals first: 32 x 6,894.7573 Pa per psi = 220,632.23 Pa.
  2. Then divide by pascals per bar: 220,632.23 / 100,000 = 2.2063223 bar.
  3. One bar is exactly 100,000 Pa, one standard atmosphere is exactly 101,325 Pa, and one PSI (pound-force per square inch) is 6,894.757 Pa.
  • Gauge pressure is measured against the air around you and absolute pressure is measured against a vacuum. Conversion between units does not change which one a reading is, and it does not add or remove about one atmosphere. Follow the rating on your equipment for any safety limit.

How to use the psi to bar converter

  1. Enter the pressure. A gauge reading below the surrounding air pressure can be negative.
  2. Pick the unit it is in under From and the unit you want under To.
  3. Read the answer in the headline and the same pressure in every unit in the table below.
  4. Use Copy, Print or export the CSV to keep the table.

Formula

pascals = value x pascals per unit of the From unit

result = pascals / pascals per unit of the To unit

1 bar = 100,000 Pa, 1 atm = 101,325 Pa

1 psi = 0.45359237 x 9.80665 / 0.0254^2 = 6,894.757 Pa

Millimeters of mercury use the conventional 133.322387415 Pa, torr is 101,325 / 760 Pa and a kilogram-force per square centimeter is 98,066.5 Pa. Results show up to eight significant digits.

32 psi in bar

32 psi is 32 x 6,894.757 = 220,632.23 Pa. Divided by 100,000 Pa per bar, that is 2.2063 bar. In atmospheres it is 2.1775 atm, and in millimeters of mercury it is 1,654.88.

Going the other way, one standard atmosphere is 1.01325 bar and 14.695949 psi, and one bar is about 14.5038 psi.

Gauge and absolute pressure

A tire gauge reads pressure above the surrounding air, called gauge pressure. Weather reports and physics problems use absolute pressure, which counts from a vacuum. Converting units does not change which kind a reading is, and it does not add or take away about one atmosphere. If a formula needs absolute pressure, add the local air pressure yourself first.

That is why this page accepts negative values: a vacuum gauge shows readings below zero gauge. The conversion factor is the same either way.

Where each unit shows up

Bar and kilopascal appear on European equipment and in engineering. PSI is common in the United States on tires, compressors and pressure washers. Millimeters of mercury and torr appear in medicine, vacuum work and weather. Millibar is used for air pressure forecasts.

For related problems, the ideal gas law calculator uses these units, the unit converter handles length, mass and volume, and the tire size calculator compares tire dimensions. Always follow the rating on your equipment for a safe working limit.

Assumptions and limits

  • Pressures can be from -1e15 to 1e15. Negative values are accepted for gauge readings below ambient pressure.
  • The page converts units only. It does not convert between gauge and absolute pressure.
  • Millimeters of mercury use the conventional value 133.322387415 pascals.
  • Nothing is stored or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How many psi is 1 bar?

One bar is about 14.5038 psi. In the other direction, one psi is about 0.0689476 bar. The converter above works out any value between the two.

What is 32 psi in bar?

32 psi is about 2.206 bar, or 220.6 kilopascals. The result table shows the same pressure in every other unit.

What is the difference between bar and atmosphere?

A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals and a standard atmosphere is exactly 101,325 pascals, so one atmosphere is 1.01325 bar. They are close enough to confuse and different enough to matter in precise work.

Does this change gauge pressure to absolute pressure?

No. It only changes units. To convert a gauge reading to absolute pressure you add the surrounding air pressure, which you need to know separately.
