How to use the phone number formatter
- Paste your phone numbers, one per line. A short sample list is loaded.
- Choose the format, such as (555) 123-4567, 555-123-4567 or +1 555 123 4567.
- Read the table: each line with its result, and a note for any line that was left as typed.
- Copy the results as a list, or download them as a text file.
Ten digits in several styles
The digits 5551234567 become (555) 123-4567 in the first style, 555-123-4567 with dashes, 555.123.4567 with dots, +1 555 123 4567 in international style and +15551234567 in the compact style.
The line 1-555-123-4567 loses the leading 1 and gives the same ten digits. The line 555-123-4567 ext 12 keeps its extension and becomes (555) 123-4567 x12.
What it formats
The tool formats North American style numbers, which have 10 digits, or 11 digits when the first is the country code 1. Separators such as spaces, dashes, dots and parentheses are ignored when reading, and an extension written as x, ext or a comma is kept at the end. Everything else on the line is checked before it is changed.
A line is left exactly as typed, with a note, when it has letters (for example a word spelled with a keypad), another country code, a different number of digits, or other characters. Nothing is guessed, and each skipped line is counted in the summary.
What it does not do
This is a layout tool only. It does not check that the numbers are real, assigned or in service, and it does not check area codes or exchange codes. A line of ten digits that happens to be invalid is formatted like any other. For international numbers use the format your phone or contact system expects.
Up to 5,000 lines are handled in your browser, and the numbers are never uploaded. To build a chat link from a number use the WhatsApp link generator, to clean lists try the text line tools, to pull emails and links from text use the extract emails and URLs tool, and to check a data file use the CSV validator.
Assumptions and limits
- Numbers have 10 digits, or 11 digits starting with 1, in North American style.
- Area codes and exchanges are not validated, and a formatted number may not exist.
- Extensions are kept, written as x followed by digits, or ;ext= in the compact style.
- Lines that do not fit are left as typed and noted.
Frequently asked questions
How do I format a phone number as (555) 123-4567?
Choose that style and paste the number. Any mix of digits, spaces, dashes and dots is accepted as long as there are 10 digits.
What happens to numbers with a country code?
A leading 1, with or without a plus sign, is removed when the other 10 digits are present. Other country codes are left as typed.
Does the tool check if a number is valid?
No. It only checks the digit count and layout. It cannot tell whether a number is real or in service.
Are my numbers sent anywhere?
No. The list is formatted in your browser and never leaves it.
