How to use the nth business day of the month calculator
- Choose the first month and year, and how many months you want in the list, up to 36.
- Enter which business day you want, and whether to count from the start or from the end of the month.
- Choose which days are your weekly days off, and list any holidays to skip, one date per line.
- Read the date for each month, its weekday and the number of business days in that month.
Formula
business days = days of the month that are not weekly days off and not listed holidays
from the start: the Nth business day in date order
from the end: the Nth business day counted backwards, so 1 is the last one
none, if the month has fewer than N business days
A holiday that falls on a weekly day off changes nothing. Only the dates you list are skipped; there is no built-in holiday calendar.
October 2026
October 1, 2026 is a Thursday. The business days are October 1, 2, then 5 to 9, and so on, so the 3rd business day is Monday, October 5, 2026. October has 22 business days. October 31 is a Saturday, so the last business day is Friday, October 30.
For the six months from October 2026, the 3rd business day is October 5, November 4, December 3, January 5, February 3 and March 3. If you list November 4 and 5 as holidays, the 4th business day of November moves to Monday, November 9.
What the date is used for
Many schedules are set as the third business day or the last business day of the month: payroll, billing runs, reports and rent. Looking up one month at a time is slow, so the tool lists a run of months at once, which you can copy or download.
To count business days between two dates or add them to a date, use the Business Days Calculator. For a rule like the third Monday, use the Nth Weekday Calculator, and for the last calendar day use the Last Day of Month Calculator.
Holidays and weekends
The weekly days off can be Saturday and Sunday, Friday and Saturday, or Sunday only. Add holidays as dates in the box in the form 2026-11-26 or 11/26/2026. Holiday calendars differ by country, region and company, and change by year, so enter the ones you follow.
Assumptions and limits
- Weeks run on the Gregorian calendar, and years from 1583 to 9000 are accepted.
- Only the holidays you list are skipped.
- A holiday listed twice or on a weekly day off has no extra effect.
- Half days and partial closures are treated as business days.
- Check the result against your own calendar before using it for a deadline.
Frequently asked questions
What does counting from the end mean?
Business day 1 from the end is the last business day of the month, 2 is the one before it, and so on.
Why does a month show None?
That month has fewer business days than the number you asked for, for example the 23rd business day of a short month.
Can I use a four day work week?
Not directly. The tool offers three weekly patterns. For other patterns, list the extra days off as holidays.
How many months can I list?
Up to 36 months from the first month you choose.
