How to use the title and meta description length checker
- Type or paste your page title and meta description.
- Optionally enter the page address for the preview.
- Check the limits. The starting numbers are examples, and you can change them to what you want to hold to.
- Read the character and word counts, the estimated width, and the preview of how an over long title or description would be cut.
What is counted
Characters are counted as visible characters, so an emoji counts as one, and extra spaces and line breaks are collapsed first. Words are runs of text separated by spaces. These two numbers are exact. The width is an estimate in pixels, made by measuring the text with Arial at 20 pixels for the title and 14 pixels for the description in your own browser.
Long text is often cut off in a list of results, and the cut depends on width rather than the number of characters, so a title full of wide letters like W is shorter than one full of narrow ones like i. That is why the tool shows both. If your browser cannot measure text, it reports characters only.
Limits you choose
The tool starts with 60 characters and 600 pixels for a title and 160 characters and 920 pixels for a description. They are examples, not official figures, and sites that list pages change how much they show without notice. They may also write their own title or description. Change the four numbers to match the rule you want to follow, and the checks and preview follow.
The preview cuts the text where it would pass the first limit that applies, preferring the end of a word and adding an ellipsis. It shows a cut, not a promise of what any site displays. Write for people first: a clear title and a description that says what the page offers beat one stuffed with keywords. Other writing helpers are the meta tag generator, the social character counter, the word counter and the slug generator.
Privacy
The text is measured in your browser and never uploaded or stored. The sample title and description are only examples so you can see how the tool works before you replace them.
Assumptions and limits
- Characters and words are exact counts. Pixel width is an estimate that depends on your browser and fonts.
- The limits are examples that you can edit, not official limits.
- The preview shows a cut to your limits and does not predict what any site displays.
- Limits must be whole numbers above 0.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a meta description be?
There is no fixed length. The tool starts with 160 characters as an example, and lets you set your own limit and see the width as well.
Why does the tool show pixels as well as characters?
Long text is usually cut by width, so wide letters take more room. The estimate helps you see when a title that looks short may still be cut.
Are 60 and 600 official limits for a title?
No. They are starting examples. Edit them to the limit you want to apply.
How are characters counted?
Each visible character counts as one, including emoji, and repeated spaces and line breaks are collapsed into single spaces before counting.
Is what I type stored anywhere?
No. It stays in your browser tab.
