CSV Delimiter Changer

Change the separator in CSV text, including TSV to CSV, without breaking quoted fields.

Paste CSV, TSV or similar text. Up to 2,000,000 characters. Quoted fields are respected.

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. A field that contains the new separator, a double quote or a line break gets double quotes so the data stays in the right columns. Tabs pasted into a text box are kept as tabs.

    Next step

How to use the csv delimiter changer

    1. Paste your delimited text into the first box. It can be CSV, TSV or any text with commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes between fields.
    2. Leave Separator now on Detect it or choose the one in your data, then pick the separator to change it to.
    3. Optionally choose CRLF line endings or put quotes around every field.
    4. Read the converted text in the result box. Copy converted text or Download file.

    Why quoting matters

Changing a separator by find and replace breaks data whenever a field contains the old or new separator. The tool reads the text as CSV first, so a field like "Likes tea; coffee" stays one field, and writes it again with double quotes only where they are needed. When the new separator appears inside a field, that field gets quotes automatically. The page counts how many fields were quoted.

The same applies to double quotes inside fields, which are written as two quotes, and to fields that contain line breaks, which stay in one piece.

    TSV, semicolons and European files

Tab separated files (TSV) and comma separated files are the most common pair. Many European spreadsheet settings use a semicolon instead of a comma, because the comma is the decimal mark there, so a file from one country can open as a single column in another. Switching the separator fixes it without opening the file.

Text pasted into a browser box keeps its tabs. If your data came from a spreadsheet, copying a range and pasting it here gives tab separated text. The CSV validator can check a file afterward, and the CSV to Excel converter opens it as a workbook.

    What stays the same

The tool changes separators, quoting and line endings, nothing else. It does not trim spaces, change numbers or dates, drop empty lines inside quoted fields or reorder columns. Rows with different numbers of fields are kept as they are, and the page tells you when that happens. The input limit is 2,000,000 characters and the work is done in your browser.

For other changes, see the CSV and JSON converter and the CSV sorter.

    Assumptions and limits

    • Fields wrapped in double quotes are read as one field, including separators and line breaks inside them.
    • A field is quoted on output when it contains the new separator, a double quote, a line break or spaces at either end.
    • Completely empty lines are dropped. Lines with only spaces are treated as empty.
    • Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the input is limited to 2,000,000 characters.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert TSV to CSV?

Paste the tab separated text, leave the separator on Detect it and choose Comma as the new separator. Fields that contain a comma are put in quotes automatically.

How do I change a semicolon CSV to a comma CSV?

Paste the file, choose Comma under Change it to, and copy the result. Quoted fields with semicolons or commas inside them stay in one piece.

Why did some fields get quotes?

Because they contain the new separator, a double quote or a line break, and quotes keep them in a single field. The page tells you how many fields were quoted.

Does it change numbers or dates?

No. Only the separators, quoting and line endings change. The text of every field is kept exactly as it was.
