Box Plot Maker

Draw a box plot from pasted numbers, with the quartile method you need and a summary table.

For one box, type numbers separated by spaces, commas or new lines. For several boxes, put each group on its own line as a name, a colon and the numbers, such as Class A: 62 65 68. Up to 12 groups and 100,000 numbers per group.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

Plot

Everything is drawn in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The box runs from the first to the third quartile with a thick line at the median. With whiskers at 1.5 x IQR, each whisker ends at the most extreme number within 1.5 interquartile ranges of the box, and numbers beyond that are drawn as circles. The table lists every number shown, so the information does not depend on the picture.

How to use the box plot maker

  1. Type or paste your numbers, or choose a .csv or .txt file. For one box, enter the numbers separated by spaces, commas or new lines. For several boxes, put each group on its own line, such as Class A: 62 65 68.
  2. Pick a quartile method, how far the whiskers reach, and whether the plot is vertical or horizontal. Tick Mark the mean with a + if you want the mean shown. Add a title and a label for the numbers if you like.
  3. The plot and a table of each group's summary appear as you type. Hover over a box to see its numbers.
  4. Use Download PNG or Download SVG for the picture, Download CSV for the table, or Copy table for text.

The numbers 1 to 9, and three classes

For the numbers 1 to 9 the median is 5, the first quartile is 3 and the third quartile is 7 with the default linear method, so the box runs from 3 to 7 and the interquartile range is 4. The fences are 3 - 6 = -3 and 7 + 6 = 13, so the whiskers reach 1 and 9 and nothing is drawn as an outlier.

In the example scores, Class C has numbers from 58 to 98 with Q1 = 63.25, median 66.5 and Q3 = 69.5. The interquartile range is 6.25, so the upper fence is 69.5 + 1.5 x 6.25 = 78.875. The score 98 is beyond it and is drawn as a circle, and the upper whisker ends at 71, the largest score inside the fence.

How the box and whiskers are built

The box runs from the first quartile to the third quartile and a thick line marks the median. The interquartile range, or IQR, is the distance between those quartiles. With whiskers set to 1.5 x IQR, each whisker ends at the most extreme number that is no further than 1.5 IQRs from the box, and numbers beyond those fences are drawn as circles. Set the whiskers to the smallest and largest to include every number with no circles.

A box plot does not show how many numbers there are or whether they cluster. The table below the plot lists the count, the mean and every outlier, and hovering over a box shows the same numbers.

Quartile methods

There is more than one accepted way to find quartiles, and they can differ slightly. Linear, the default, places the quartile at position (n - 1) x p between ordered values. Exclusive uses position (n + 1) x p, which reaches further toward the ends. The two halves methods find the median of the lower and upper half of the ordered numbers, leaving out the middle number or including it when there is an odd count. All four match reference calculations in numpy and Python on seven data sets.

Choose the method your class, textbook or software uses so your numbers agree with it. To work out the summary numbers alone, use the descriptive statistics calculator, and to see the shape of one data set in bars, the histogram maker is a good companion.

Privacy and limits

The numbers are read and drawn in your browser and are not uploaded. You can plot up to 12 groups with up to 100,000 numbers each. A number with thousands separators such as 1,234 is refused with a message, because a comma would otherwise split it into two numbers.

Assumptions and limits

  • Outliers are numbers beyond 1.5 times the IQR from the box. That multiplier is a common convention, not a rule of nature.
  • The quartile method is your choice, and different methods can give slightly different boxes for the same numbers.
  • The mean is the ordinary average and the + mark shows where it falls.
  • Group names are limited to 40 characters, and the plot shows at most 12 groups.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an outlier?

With the default setting, any number more than 1.5 times the interquartile range above the third quartile or below the first quartile. Such numbers are drawn as circles.

Why does my box differ from another tool?

Tools use different quartile methods. Change the quartile method here to the one the other tool uses and the numbers will agree.

How do I compare several groups?

Put each group on its own line as a name, a colon and the numbers. The groups are drawn side by side on one scale.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything is calculated and drawn in your browser tab, and downloads are made on your device.
